My project

Ancient Greece.
I am finding out all about the olympic games.

The olympic games started in ancient Greece around 776BC and are still being held today all around the world, they are held every four years, they were held in honour of Zeus who is the king of the Gods. The games started off in a place called olympia,a valley near a city called Elis in Greece. You can still visit olympia today as a tourist and still see remains of some of the buildings. As you can see from the picture at the top.

The olympic games were important as they were classed as a religious festival this meant people from other cities could travel in safety to olympia. As each of the cities had their own goverment which ruled each city, they had to announce a sacred truce one month before the games to stop any wars braking out between cities. The olympics were more important than wars as they were a religious festival.People came from all over Greece to get together as they normally didn't mix with each other. As you can see from the picture these were the routes travelled by the messengers who delivered the truces.

As you can see this running track at ancient olympia is much wider than they are now.Twenty people raced together in one race, and now you only have about eight in a sprint race.

This is a picture of a current running track.

In the first olympic games it was a short sprint from one end of the stadium to the other, over the years different competitions were added until it was a four day festival. One of the events was called Pankration wrestling. This was a popular contest with the ancient Greeks,it was like wrestling but not with many rules. The only rules were no biting or can you believe it no eye gouging,I think this sounds like a good rule. Can you believe some people tried to get away with breaking these rules. This contest was held on the fourth day of the festival.

At the games only men ,boys and unmarried girls were allowed to attend and take part,if women were caught attending they would be severly punished. As women were not allowed to attend they had a festival called Heraia, this was in honour of Zeus wife called Hera.As I wrote at the start the olympic games were held in honour Zeus. The events at the ladies festival were all running races and unmarried girls took part. All the winners at each festival all received crowns of sacred olive branches,as shown in the picture. In the last olympics in Athens they used the same crowns,This was held in 2004.

The VIP's and competitors were lucky to stay in the special accomodation,as most of the spectators had to stay in tents or sleep rough. It was not a nice enviroment as it would have been very overcrowded and hot, the water supply was also very poor.Nowadays athletes still stay together but have their own built athletes village for the event and are looked after very well.

This was how the first ancient olympia stadium would have looked in 776BC.

This is a picture of the last stadium to be used in Athens in the year 2004.

It seems funny to me that something that started in ancient Greece will be coming to London in 2012 and maybe someone I know will be taking part or even me.I am sure the athletes are glad times have changed as I do not think people will want to take part if it was like ancient Olympia.

My maths affirmation!

My affirmation to do with maths is I am good at place value and understand it really well. The maths games I used were dot to dot, fishy numbers and place value darts.

difference between two times!

Mr.P I got every single one of the difference between two times homework right. It was very good especially when it came up with the ones that went from one day to another and morning to afternoon.

How my painting went and what I would change if I was to do it again!

My painting went quite well I think. It was quite hard as well because I was doing a different painting of something else, but in the end I did a painting of the Parthenon.I would change the build up to the painting because I didn't have long to do it because of the painting I was doing before also if I did it again I would not give myself a day I would give myself a bit longer.

Mr P

I have done the fractions homework ,I enjoyed the one with the monkeys on it,it was good because it was really fun but your also learning.

I think all of them were good but the other two that stood out for me were the
second and third ones for the same reason as the first one.

I tried the harder test and got 9/14 which I think is quite good but I still need some practice.
