As you can see this running track at ancient olympia is much wider than they are now.Twenty people raced together in one race, and now you only have about eight in a sprint race.
This is a picture of a current running track.
In the first olympic games it was a short sprint from one end of the stadium to the other, over the years different competitions were added until it was a four day festival. One of the events was called Pankration wrestling. This was a popular contest with the ancient Greeks,it was like wrestling but not with many rules. The only rules were no biting or can you believe it no eye gouging,I think this sounds like a good rule. Can you believe some people tried to get away with breaking these rules. This contest was held on the fourth day of the festival.
At the games only men ,boys and unmarried girls were allowed to attend and take part,if women were caught attending they would be severly punished. As women were not allowed to attend they had a festival called Heraia, this was in honour of Zeus wife called Hera.As I wrote at the start the olympic games were held in honour Zeus. The events at the ladies festival were all running races and unmarried girls took part. All the winners at each festival all received crowns of sacred olive branches,as shown in the picture. In the last olympics in Athens they used the sam
e crowns,This was held in 2004.
The VIP's and competitors were lucky to stay in the special accomodation,as most of the spectators had to stay in tents or sleep rough. It was not a nice enviroment as it would have been very overcrowded and hot, the water supply was also very poor.Nowadays athletes still stay together but have their own built athletes village for the event and are looked after very well.
This was how the first ancient olympia stadium wo
uld have looked in 776BC.
This is a picture of the last stadium to be used in Athens in the year 2004.
It seems funny to me that something that started in ancient Greece will be coming to London in 2012 and maybe someone I know will be taking part or even me.I am sure the athletes are glad times have changed as I do not think people will want to take part if it was like ancient Olympia.
